Scenic View Imagine…

You and your spouse are finally getting away for a weekend together. Even though you are not traveling far, it is a vacation away from the realities of the "real world" - a time for yourselves. After a day of activities together you go to bed… only to start feeling sick to your stomach with a strong headache coming on. This headache seems to be focused behind your right eye and you start to notice some tingling sensations on your left side.

This is what happened to David Schultz. His wife Deborah Schultz, immediately decided to seek medical attention. She drove him to the nearest hospital in Sandstone with the help and direction of a waitress at a local bar.

After doing a CT scan, it was discovered that David had an intracranial bleed - he had blood accumulating inside of his skull. Upon this discovery, he was transferred by helicopter to St. Joseph's hospital in St. Paul, MN, where he underwent emergency surgery to remove the clot that had formed and to stop the bleeding. He came out of the surgery that he had a 10-20% chance of surviving in critical condition.

What was the cause of this? His wife and children were told that, despite being an otherwise healthy 55 year old, he had been born with a vascular malformation in his skull that had started to bleed without warning.

Dave in ICU
This all happened the night of September 16, 2005. Since that time David has come a long way. He spent the first month in the intensive care unit at St. Joseph's Hospital, an additional month at Bethesda Rehabilitation Center and then was moved to Rose of Sharon nursing home to promote his recovery with additional monitoring and physical therapy.

With the very limited feeling and control of his left side, he is still wheelchair dependent. He has learned to assist with transferring from the bed to the chair, as well as to walk short distances with the support of a guide rail or walker while using his right side to support his left. His vision was also greatly affected, though the doctors say he may still see improvement in the months to come. Despite the progress that has been made, the road to recovery is still long.

Throughout the months since September 16th, his wife Deborah has been there for him during every moment she can spare. If she is not at work during the day, she is at the nursing home to encourage David and make sure he is receiving the care he needs. Oftentimes, she does not return home until after 9:30 at night. She will continue this schedule until she is able to have her husband come home.

Dave at Rose of Sharron This benefit is to help David and Deborah accomplish that goal. The money raised will go to assist this family in paying for medical costs already accumulated, as well as helping obtain medical supplies needed to remodel their home so David can safely return there.

Thank you in advance for your generosity and, please, spread the word about this benefit to everyone you know. Thank You!
